Discussion Board Topic: Does the apple fall far from the tree?

Emma’s father and mother both have had histories of run-ins with the criminal justice system. Both have significant histories of alcohol and drug abuse. Emma’s father has spent a majority of her childhood in prison, mainly for a variety of different property and drug related crimes. And, she has spent part of her childhood in and out of foster homes due to neglect issues.

Many of the readings for this Unit discuss the impact of parents on their children’s behavior. As they say, the apple does not fall far from the tree. However, we also know that good kids can come from bad families. For this discussion topic, you are to pick a side. Choose one of the following stances:
Stance 1: Emma’s family will have an impact on her family and she is destined to a life of crime. Be sure to identify those factors that will contribute to her continued delinquency.
Stance 2: Emma can rebound from these issues and not be impacted. Be sure to identify those protective factors that will help Emma rebound.
Note: Read through everyone’s posts. Respond to two classmates from two different groups. In order to see what other students have written, you will need to post your response (main post) first.

We’re all the same?

The profiles of girls and boys are the same but in reality they should be treated different. Boys and girls are delinquent for several different reasons. More girls are abused and raped than boys. The feelings from those traumatizing events leave girls depressed and force them to run away from home for safety or even turn to drugs or alcohol to cope. If a girl engages in delinquent acts she’s more likely to have a mental problem or may be suffering from sexual abuse or physical abuse from someone very close to them. A girl’s delinquent acts are usually a serious cry for help. Boys engage in delinquent acts because of peer pressure, financial gain or so that they can appear more masculine and gain respect by acting tough. Boys and girls can’t be treated the same because they don’t engage in delinquent acts for the same reasons.

I agree that female and male teen delinquent for the same reason. I say this because they are causing these crimes for a reason and that reason can be anything such as, family relationships, growing up around crime, trying to fit into the crowd and people around them encouraging them to do so. Crimes that are committed by these teens are same crimes that adults and others commit. It does not matter age or size you are accountable for your actions and no one else.

And I do think that they both should be treated the same? Of course their actions should be treated the same. I do not believe that anyone that commits a delinquent act should be hit with a slap on the wrist does not matter if you are a male, female, african american, white, old or young a crime is a crime and you should be punished for your idiotic actions. No one should be let off easy on things they no it is not the right thing to do.
