ASSESSING THE SOCIAL-CULTURAL ENVIRONMENT

BUS 150 – Third Writing Assignment

Purpose:

To gain a rich cultural and social awareness about the country you are investigating. You will also connect your business product or service with the facts and figures found during your research. This builds somewhat on research you did in Writing Assignments A and B – However, this will be more in-depth about socio-cultural factors.

The Rules:

Documentation: Use a Microsoft Word or Google Document to write your paper. Do not attempt to upload or email Apple product files – it will not transmit correctly.

Research: Based on the country you selected in Writing Assignment A and that you researched as well in Writing Assignment B, research information related to the areas listed under “Research Subjects”, below.

  • Write: Produce a paper that answers and addresses the questions below. The assignment word count maximum is 1,200 words and the minimum is 800 words. Your reference page (required) and cover page are excluded from the word count.
  • Write in prose style – that is, in paragraph form, not bullet lists. However, you may ADD tables or graphics if these help you present your information. You must write something about the table or graphic – it does not “substitute” for writing. If you do not produce these tables or graphics yourself, you absolutely must include the in-text citation and the reference at the end.
  • Remember: tie your product or service idea to the facts you discover in each area of this report.

Research and Write About (and you are using facts, not your imagination, for all of these):

Research Subjects, Writing Assignment #6:

1 – be sure to state what your proposed business is!

  1. DEMOGRAPHIC TRENDS – Identify demographic trends (such as birth rates, literacy rates, education levels, etc.) that might influence business activities in the country. For example, lower birth rates result in an aging population with health care challenges. A very young population may limit (or increase) the potential market for your product.
    1. You may want to find a population pyramid for your country. If you find one, you may copy and paste it into your paper as a picture. BE CERTAIN TO INCLUDE THE FULL IN-TEXT CITATION AND REFERENCE.
    2. Remember to tie your product or service idea to the facts you discover in each area of this report.
  2. CULTURAL ANALYSIS IN THE COUNTRY – Discuss language, customs, traditions, and beliefs of the country. Religious beliefs, for instance, may make sales of certain products inappropriate. This will be more detailed that what you looked at in Writing Assignment A.
  3. C. SOCIAL INSTITUTIONS – Analyze the influences of social institutions (family, church, labor organizations, civic services, etc.) on the business culture. In some countries, for example, a strong tie exists between family and business and may influence what products or services to purchase. Remember to tie your product or service idea to the facts you discover in each area of this report.
  4. In-Text Citations and References
    • Do NOT use a “citation creator” UNLESS you thoroughly proofread the results before putting them into your document. They are often wrong. You are responsible for the information in the reference list, not the citation program.
