Response to Question 3 in Assignment 1:

Leadership Styles

It is imperative to note that communities are dynamic or evolving. This justifies the effectiveness of visionary leadership style in public leadership. By applying the visionary leadership style, a public leader will become outstanding as s/he transforms the vision into a reality (Northouse, (2018). It should however be realized that this transformation occurs through action and involving a team to concert both skills and effort. For example, the City manager has visualized the Academy as an institution meant to produce world class public leaders who can perform. He has therefore picked me as part of the team that is going to develop and implement the project. Undeniably, this is a good example of a public leader who with a visionary leadership style has picked a formidable team led by me. Importantly, a public leader using the visionary leadership style is able to determine the skills that will help in reaching the visions. Therefore, by recognizing talent and recruiting individuals with skills sets required and the ones that complement each other the vision is easily reached (Jian, & Fairhurst, 2017). Notably, with the City manager’s skills, mine and those of my subordinates a sufficient pool of skills is developed to attain the vision’s goals.

Finally, the democratic leadership style characterizing public leaders is effective because it incorporates aspects of fairness, and open communication. The leader involves all stakeholders making his or her leadership role experience little or no frictions thus success. A good example of this style in public leadership is when a public leader like the City manager in my local government  allows the community as well as stakeholders to air their views in regards to the development and implementation of the new one million dollar Public Leadership Academy. Evidentially, the City manager as a public leader is noted in this example to be involving all stakeholders in a participative approach in relation to the Academy. In conclusion, it can be seen that communication also moves either way upward and downward from the City manager to stakeholders or from the stakeholders to the city manager a major characteristic of the democratic leadership style expected of a public leader.
