 Cultural Immersion Project Part 1

For this assignment I have chosen black culture. I am a recent white transplant from Central Oregon to Southeast Texas. A  97% dominant white culture to a multicultural region with a nearly 50% black population. This is a brand-new experience for me and my family and the culture at large is very different than what we are accustomed to. From language dialect, food, customs, health, government, city structure, parks, recycling, and most shocking, is the weather! Central Oregon is known as the “high-desert” and is very dry with long winters. We moved here last July in the middle of summer! Keep in mind I am very active and an avid runner.  However, just from moving my belongings from the truck to the house, I never perspired so much in my entire life! My clothes were soaked like I had just jumped into a pool. The bill of my hat was dripping with sweat! A reprieve is the fact that although it is the middle of winter where we live now, it was 70 degrees on Monday! Aside from the major weather difference, the culture has had both positive and negative impressions. Since we are near Louisiana, we have been introduced to great cultural foods like “Gumbo”. There is also something say about “Southern Hospitality”. In general people have been very friendly and welcoming. One difficult adjustment has been the lack of environmentally friendly recycling. In Central Oregon we had a recycling garbage can for plastics and paper, a yard debris can, and a glass recycling container. Here there is no household recycling effort at all. Another notable uneasiness we have experienced, is the undertones of racism coming from both blacks and whites.  “in analyzing racial discrimination, has argued we ‘must not look for the gross and obvious. The subtle, cumulative mini-assault is the substance of today’s racism” (Smith, et.al., 2016, p.1192).

Regarding my specific cultural immersion and the challenges that I will face, I am really looking forward to learning more about the black culture, specifically in this geographical area. I intend on practicing here, so all the insight and knowledge gained is going be beneficial now and for the future. There is a rich Christian heritage in this region and there are more churches than I can count. However, while integration is noted in most all business and public settings, from what I have observed and have been told, churches are nearly 100% segregated. It is mystifying to me how “like minded” people can be so distant from one another; regardless of skin color. “I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment” I Corinthians 1:10 (NIV).  I am eager to visit an all-black church, to mingle, interview, and gain insight about their culture and perspectives. One reason for church segregation that I have gleaned at least from a white person’s viewpoint, is differences in music preference. “The African American music tradition stretches back to songs and laments brought back from the Middle Passage. Work Songs shouts and spirituals were always a part of the African American’s lives” (Black History in America, n.d.).
