Second Discussion Post:

Many times in business, it makes most sense to organically expand, but not all expansions are the same. Here are some advantages and disadvantages to various forms of organic expansion.

A merger is a legal consolidation of two entities into one entity, whereas an acquisition occurs when one entity takes ownership of another entity’s stock, equity interests or assets.

An acquisition is often times against the will of the management of the smaller company becoming acquired, but is good for the company doing the acquiring. With an acquisition, you are also increasing your economies of scale, accessing new funds for development, reducing costs and overhead and reduce the competition. These are all helpful when establishing market share.

A Joint venture is a joint undertaking where parties will combine their resources, share ownership as well as all of the risks and returns.

With licensing, a company may buy the rights to a product or image. This will save the company much time when it comes to creating products to sell, but comes at the cost of not actually owning the product you are selling.

Franchising is a form of licensing but in the form of a company, for example, McDonalds is a franchise that is licensed to many different managers around the country.

A strategic alliance is similar to merger except that both parties remain independent and only come to an agreed upon set of objectives.

A merger might be the best option for both parties that want to combine resources in a mutually benefits arrangement. A merger will often times lead to market share which means less competition and higher prices for consumers and higher profits for the company. In 2015, Dell acquired EMC Corporation which was the largest technology merger in history. (Broadbeck, 2015)
