What is an Annotated Bibliography?

What is an Annotated Bibliography? An annotated bibliography is an alphabetized list of sources (books, articles, websites) like a Works Cited. It differs from a Works Cited in that each MLA citation is followed by a paragraph length annotation. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the contents, relevance, and quality of the sources cited. Your research paper topic in English 001 the topic you use for your Annotated Bibliography (AB). *AB EXAMPLE*Preview the documentView in a new window Please note this example is only a visual aid for what the AB should LOOK like; as you will see the topic is obviously completely different from your own. The source requirements may also be different. *Do not use this example as a guide- Read the Directions* Additionally, the purpose of the annotated bibliography in LR10 is to: Provide an opportunity for you to demonstrate the research skills you have learned in LR10 thus far; Guide you in the research portion of your final English 001 research paper; Engage you in the process of locating, selecting, evaluating sources, and summarizing sources; important skills that you will use throughout your academic and professional lives. This assignment has three graded parts: MLA formatted Summary page Annotations of your 4 required sources Evidence MLA formatted Summary Page (Page 1) (get the date format right please). Describe your final English 001 research paper topic and the direction you are headed with your research. Annotations (Start Page 2) In alphabetical order by citation, create annotations for five sources total with five annotations. Source requirements: 1 full-text book (no textbooks, no Google books, eBrary books are OK, print books are OK). Create an MLA 8 citation for the book or book chapter Write 2-3 sentences describing the content of the book or book chapter Write 2-3 sentences describing the relevance of the book or book chapter to your research project in English. Give a clear and detailed description of how you located this source. Also include the type of source you have located and the source it came from, ex. Source Type: Book vfrom the Ebscohost ebook database. Provide evidence. Please see “How to Provide Evidence” in the Final Project portion of LR10 Any two (2) articles from an SCC Database: Must be full-text, not from Google. Create an MLA 8 citation for each article Write 2-3sentences describing the content of the article Write 2-3 sentences describing the relevance of the article to your research project in English 1. Give a clear and detailed description of how you located this source. Also include the type of source you have located and the source it came from, ex. Source Type: Newspaper article from the Ebscohost database. Provide evidence. Please see “How to Provide Evidence” in the Final Project portion of LR10 1 website: Find 1 authoritative website on your topic. Yes! Use Google! Create an MLA 8 citation for this website/webpage Write 2-3 sentences describing the content of the website/webpage Provide a detailed CARS or CRAAP evaluation of your site. (Don’t forget this part) Write 2-3 sentences describing the relevance of the website/webpage to your research project in English Give a clear and detailed description of how you located this source. Also include the type of source you have located and the source it came from, ex. Source Type: Website Provide evidence. Please see “How to Provide Evidence” in the Final Project portion of LR10 Frequently Messed Up Items: Summary page: Don’t forget it. Make sure you check your MLA heading and page numbering. Works Cited: Remember hanging indents, italics and punctuation. No underlining. Do not cite OneSearch- cite the database where you end up, otherwise it is like citing Google. If you use an ebook you must do an ebook citation (this includes a database). Annotations: Make sure your annotations are sufficiently detailed. Don’t forget to do a CARS evaluation of your website. 60% of students forget to do this. Formatting: Double space the entire thing. Alphabetize your sources. There will be evidence for each source. Works Cited and Annotated Bibliographies without evidence will be considered incomplete! Please see “How to Provide Evidence” in the Final Project portion of LR10. If you are unsure about something: ASK for clarification. If you are not successfully finding sources for your bibliography: ASK for help. Use the examples posted in class.
